El Capo Manchester review
El Capo Manchester Reviews

If you can ignore the annoying and repetitive hip hop soundtrack, this Northern Quarter gem is the perfect example of an independent restaurant getting it right.

Whether it be the ridiculously priced Monday night steak offer, which we took advantage of, (£25 per couple for a perfectly cooked large steak, two sides and a bottle of good house wine), or the many other deals that reduce the already cheap menu (£1 taco Tuesdays, 50p chicken wings Wednesdays), you will struggle to find better value-for-money dishes in town.

There's so many non-Mexican 'Mexican' restaurants that get it wrong in Manchester, and with an explosion of burrito bars popping up all across the city, we actually broke the first rule of reviewing and entered with preconceived expectations.

For that reason, we were pleasantly surprised that the food here is generous in portion size, fresh, nicely presented and incredibly tasty. Starters or "small dishes" are the size of main courses in many other restaurants and the fact that it was packed on a Monday night, when every other bar in the area seemed empty, spoke volumes. We even had to wait at the bar, packed with over 100 tequilas, for a table to come free. This gave us chance to admire the cool decor, with the beautiful lighting and exposed industrial brick walls, painted over with artwork representing the Day Of The Dead, Mexican wrestlers and a gigantic Chihuahua.

Our waiters were incredibly friendly and helpful all night, and it was a good decision to be lead by their recommendations; the Chipotle Panga Fajitas (£12) matched the description of being "melt in the mouth" delicate white fish whilst it wasn't hard to see how the venue had become famous for its Chicken Wings (three for £3.50, or seven for £6.25, or 50p each on Wednesdays).

Almost as famous, is the Giant Burrito (£30) that the table of three, next to us, struggled to share. It really is that big!

If it wasn't for the fact we were reviewing, we wouldn't have ordered a dessert - we were really that full - however we managed to find space to share some Churos (£4.50), described by the waiter as "a doughnut meets Ferrero Rocher", these were the best we have had outside of Spain, and you have to question why they aren't also promoted as a bar snack to the drinkers who start to outnumber the diners in the vibrant ground floor bar during the weekends (the restaurant moves downstairs to the cantina). Stuffed with chilli chocolate, and accompanied with a perfectly thick chocolate dip, these, like the rest of the menu highlighted that this is a kitchen producing far better food than the price tag would suggest.

Would we recommend El Capo? Would we return? ¡A huevo!". ~ Restaurants Of Manchester (Monday 6th March 2017)
